One of the most celebrated festivals in the Marliana area is the historic “Sagra della patata fritta” in Serra. This event has been held every year, for over fifty years, during the last Sunday of September. A great end-of-summer festival involving the entire ancient medieval village, it has been organized since 1966.
The event
On the occasion of this event, a large frying pan with a diameter of two and a half meters is set up in the village in which, throughout the afternoon, quintals of potatoes are fried, cut into slices or matchsticks. The fried potatoes are then distributed free of charge to participants. As part of the event, there is also an awards ceremony for the unique “Biggest National Potato” competition with local producers competing in an attempt to break the records of past editions. There is also no shortage of music and entertainment to accompany the festive day.
